                                                              Fight Night in Algiers

Preparatory sketches and the final drawing on grained glass of Fight Night in Algiers, part of my Wolves in the City graphic novel project .
The drawing on grained glass is 12" x 16". It's a marvelous surface to draw on; I use Stabilo 8046 pencils, which look like regular pencils, but are rather like a grease pencil or litho crayon. The resistance of the glass to the pencil is similar to drawing on a lithography stone and the surfaces can be carefully built to create very dense, rich blacks. The transparency of the glass is mitigated by polishing the glass with carborundum, which gives it its milky opalescence. Yet light still passes through. So when framed, the images cast slight shadows on the surface beneath, giving the drawing a dimensionality that enhances its character.
